Candidate Statement
Starting out I created art only with a pencil and paper. For years all I would do is draw without experimenting with any other mediums. I wasn’t really exposed to any others until I was shown how to make clay pottery, but once I got to high school I had to quickly get use to the fact that I had to step out of my comfort zone and dive into painting. My artwork really took off after junior year when I entered an intense IB Fine Art course. I was challenged to expand, and through it all I learned a lot about my art and many fine artists throughout history. I started to base my paintings off personal experiences, and who I was as a person began to reflect in my work. I also noticed a theme starting to develop in my work. Throughout most of my works, I tried to depict a subject in different environments, and how that affected them.
Two of my favorite artists that have influenced and inspired me are Andy Warhol and Vincent Van Gogh. I love Andy Warhol’s use of color and repetition in all his works, and Van Gogh’s use of movement makes all his work visually interesting. I’ve been inspired by these two artist to create work that catches people’s attention and makes a statement. Continuing in art I know I need to sharpen a lot of my skills and experiment more with different mediums. In the future I want to take my art and possibly go into industrial or commercial design. I would love industrial design, because that way I could use my art to create products that could possibly make a difference in peoples lives.

Candidate Statement
Many of my pieces stem from my childhood and it shows through my vivid use of
imagination. A concern that reappears in every work is whether or not I am able to
produce that which is what I create in my mind. I feel that I am able to adapt to what
ever medium is needed in order to achieve that image I want to convey. Learning from
many artists, there has also been a need to change the technique with each piece. This
has helped me grow as an artist because each idea for a piece brings a new challenge.
The medium I worked with the most was with oil paint and the progression of the
techniques used to apply it changed noticeably. It would be used to demonstrate the
beauty of nature then its use would take on a more abstract look amplified by scale as
well. When I look into an artist, I try to find fascinating stories about them and how their
adventures may have had an impact on their work. This is what gets me into a piece that
I am creating. Their has to be a bond between me and my work which will allow me to
convey its purpose. Sometimes the purpose is an issue caused by humanity but mostly I
am trying convey who I am. I show my own culture and heritage while I am also open
minded towards other styles and beliefs as well. In a piece I focus on displaying the
principals and elements of art because they are at my core belief of what art needs to
incorporate along side technical skill. Lastly, I try to prove to myself that I can have fun
with the inner kid in me and still produce high quality work.
