The Parabolic Curve
(MYP Criteria: Application, Personal Engagement)

Picture
Learning Intention

One of the most basic and versatile configurations is the Parabolic Curve line design. The basic principle of this design is the creation of curved shapes from the intersection of straight lines. Students will complete the Parabolic Curve Worksheet to help them in understanding how to make a parabolic curve.
Students will create multiple parabolic curve line design drawings. These drawings must overlap each other. Once done with the drawings the students must checkerboard in the parabolic curves using a color triad color scheme. The students can use black + color triad or white + color triad or both to complete the assignment.
After the drawings are finished the students must fill out the parabolic curve reflection.
Success Criteria:
  • Curves are outlined in sharpie marker using a ruler
  • Checkerboard pattern is completed with a sharpie marker and each section is entirely filled in
  • The remaining checkerboard is completed using a color triad (3 equally spaced colors on a color wheel)
  • Minimum of 4 sets of overlapping parabolic curves
  • All parabolic curves are created using the 1/4 inch marks

The following giff shows how to complete a parabolic curve. Download the file, give it a second or two and it will begin an animation showing you how to complete the animation worksheet....or watch below
